Location: East Africa | Area: 945,087 sq km (364,900 sq miles) | Population: 41.0 million (estimate 2009). Capital: Dodoma; Population: 2.4 million (UN estimate 2003).
Currency:
Tanzania's unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Notes are issued as TSh10,000; 5000; 1000 and 500 denominations. Coins are issued as TSh200, 100; 50; 20; 10, 5 and 1.
Language:
Kiswahili and English are the official languages. The terms Swahili and Kiswahili are used interchangeably, though the term Swahili normally refers to the people while Kiswahili refers to the language. Originating along the coast, Kiswahili is a Bantu language with many words derived from Arabic. Other African languages such as Bantu and those of Nilo-Hamitic and Khoisan origin are also spoken in more remote regions.
Health Information:
Tanzania is located in a tropical climate with different bacteria, flora, and fauna than most visitors are accustomed to, so it is advisable to take a few health precautions when travelling to make sure that your trip goes as comfortably and smoothly as possible.
Vaccinations:
The yellow-fever vaccination is no longer officially required when entering Tanzania, yet because the disease is endemic many doctors will recommend it as a precaution. Other vaccinations that might be considered before you travel include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, and tetanus. For more information, contact your doctor.
Electricity:
The electricity supply in Tanzania is 220/240 v 50hz. Plugs are 3 point square. If you are planning to bring a video camera charger or any other electrical advice, please bring voltage and plug adaptors where appropriate.
Naro Moru is the most popular and fastest route to point Lenana although not the most scenic. Traverse though the notoriously treacherous vertical bog and into the wide Teleki Valley beneath the Tryndall, The Lewis Glacier.
