Mountain Climbing Skills and Training

You are Here: Home  Useful Info   Mountain Climbing Skills and Training

Every mountain climbing experience has one goal: to reach the next summit. No prior experience is necessary to climb Africa's mountains. However, it is recommeded that all participants on these tours be fit and in sound health. First time climbers will be gradually introduced to varying degrees of height and difficulty as each climber comfort level allows.

Climbing with an experienced mountain guide will allow you to get more routes finished and have more fun. You must be well prepared in regards to the experience you have and the equipment you bring along. The difficulty of a mountain is determined by two main factors: altitude and terrain.

Be sure to take lots of water on your trek because of altitude sickness which causes dehydration and fatigue. The most important thing is to ascend the mountain gradually once you get above 10,000 feet or so—ideally, no more than 1,000 feet per day. This gives the body time to acclimatize by building up extra red blood cells and growing more capillaries. Altitude acclimatization days are an inherent part of any mountaineering expedition above 15,000 feet.

Quick hints to enhance your experience

  • Travel light; make your luggage as small as possible
  • Always walk as a team and pay close attention to your guide
  • Leave markers along the track as you climb to help guide you down the mountain
  • Take lots of water on your hike. Ensure you carry water purifying tablets to neuter the water from streams
  • Get travel insurance! Don't leave home without it.
  • Check the weather before you travel
