Mountain Climbing Health and Safety Tips
Local Weather
Always check the weather forecast for the region and head out only if the reports say that the skies would be clear. Hold out if there is a slight chance of rain. Avoid the slightest chance of getting struck by lightning.
Appropriate Gear
Travel light; this lessens your burden as you ascend. Some of the more important amenities you need would include: sun screen, a first aid kit, a pair of sunglasses, a map, a compass, trekking rope, an ice axe, woolen coat, water pouch, food for the entire trip, and a flashlight.
Know Your Limitations
Do not rough it unless you are physically fit. Try and develop a balance of an awareness on your physical consciousness, mental and technical restrictions.
What to Wear
Clothing depends on the location. If it is the highlands, then wear woolens. Or if it is a dry terrain, light weight clothes would be appropriate. Always wear collared and full sleeved clothes not only to keep you warm, but also protect you from insect bites.
Teamwork
Be a good team player; listen to advice and instructions given by your mountain guide. If you are a newbie, ensure that you move with more experienced climbers. Always travel as a group no matter how experienced you are.
In Case of Danger
Stay calm and focussed! If you feel that you are lost, do not panic. Keep away from obstacles unless you absolutely need to climb past them. You are advised to get travel insurance before every expedition. It is also recommended that you register at the park gate before embarking on your climb. The mountain rangers know approximately how long you will take in and out of the mountain and will be on the lookout for you if you stay longer.
